Welcome Letter

Dear Students and Families,

We are so excited to welcome our new and returning families  to the second year of Hunter’s Point Community Middle School!  We look forward to working with you as we focus on our mission together- to spark young minds through scholarship, creativity, and community.

It has been a pleasure for my staff and I to get to know you this past year at our open house sessions, during our office hours, and/or as a member of our founding class.  If we have not met, please take advantage of our open office hours to see the school and pick up your summer reading book Wonder (for 6th and 7th graders) and challenge cube (for 6th graders). The summer home work assignments are included in this packet. While relaxing in July and August and spending time outside of the classroom is very important, it’s also crucial to continue to exercise your brain!  The summer assignments have been designed to keep you- our  students- reading, writing, and thinking while providing us with important information about who you are as a learner.  We hope families will work on these assignments together.

We also have some changes and exciting additions for next year!  Due to new teacher contract negotiations, staff meetings will happen every Monday from 2:40-4:00.  On Tuesdays teachers will work on afterschool family outreach (this is a great time to request a meeting or call a teacher).  Because of this, our school times will shift slightly to 8:20-2:40 every day.  While my staff will not be available for afterschool homework help or CHAMPS on Mondays or Tuesdays, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with 82nd Street Academics.  They are accepting applications via a lottery system for their free afterschool program which will take place in our school. Our teachers will be visiting HW work times every Wednesday and Ms. Liang will be the Education Specialist from HPCMS on-site every day to ensure a high-quality and seamless experience for the students involved.  We will continue to offer CHAMPS afterschool sports teams for all students throughout the year as well as a Saturday School test prep and enrichment in the Spring.

During the next month I will be working on programming schedules.  We are looking forward to music and art for all 6th graders.  We are also hoping to include some choices for our 7th graders regarding music, art, math, and language.  Stay tuned!  All students will receive a copy of their homeroom assignment, teachers, and schedule in late August.  See the enclosed flyers and newsletter for more details.

Finally, as a parent myself, I know how many questions or anxieties you and/or your child may have about next year.  If there is something you are wondering that has not been addressed in this mailing, I encourage you to reach out to me or our parent coordinator, Mr. John Rodriguez.  We are here throughout the summer to answer an email, talk to you on the phone, or meet in person.
